Potty Training Girls - Is it Much Different Than Potty Training Boys?

Published: Dec 2, 2010 by admin Filed under: News
Author: Mary Eule Scarborough

I've been potty training girls - and boys - for the last three decades I can tell you with great confidence that there is very little significant difference between the two.  In fact, the approach is exactly the same.

For instance, you'll need to make sure that your daughter is chronologically and developmentally ready.  The American Academy of Pediatrics says that most normal, healthy toddlers are ready for potty training between 16 and 27 months (18 months is the average).

However, experts are also careful to point out that developmental maturity is a much better indicator of readiness than is chronological age.

Following are several signs that your daughter is ready.

She might:

* Recognize simple words and phrases such as, "pee pee," "poop," "potty," etc.  * Demonstrate awareness of her body parts (and others') - especially genitals  * Imitate others - especially Mom, Dad and siblings

* Dress or undress herself

* Express her need for independence - For instance, I knew my granddaughter, Sevy, was "there" as soon as she starting saying, "Sevy can do it!" many times a day. (As a matter of fact, she said it so often I told her that her name should be "Sevy-Can-Do-It"!

As I indicated, these are just a few of the many clues you're likely to witness. However, if you have questions regarding this, I suggest that you consult with your pediatrician or take one of the many potty training assessment quizzes found on the Internet.

Once you're sure that it time to potty train your little girl, you'll want to arm yourself with a solid plan of action - in other words, a potty training system that will help you achieve your goal (no diapers!) successfully, joyfully, and completely.

Fortunately, achieving great results with any potty training system is not dependent on fancy potty chairs, toys, or dolls. They're simply not necessary.  However, there's certainly no harm in providing a few extras, if you'd like.

Here are a few "nice-to-have" potty training tips specifically for little girls.

1. Outfit your daughter in dresses during potty training. Why pull down pants, undo buttons, or unzip zippers when your little one has to use the potty? Instead, use potty training as an opportunity to make your little girl feel pretty and make it easier on you to get them to the potty on time!

2. Allow your daughter to choose her "big girl" underwear.  Why not celebrate this wonderful rite of passage with a shopping trip to your local department store for pretty underwear?  Your little girl will love picking out her favorites and you'll have a natural opportunity to talk with her about potty training.  Everyone wins...

3. Consider purchasing potty books specifically developed for little girls. There are many great potty books and DVDs available on the Internet and in stores - some are quite general, while others are strictly for girls.  Are these books mandatory?  No - at least not in my opinion.  However, if you're set on purchasing one, it makes sense to buy one that comes closest to what your child will experience.

Bottom line - Potty training girls is identical in methodology to potty training boys.  Yes, there are several minor differences, but the approach, support, timing, and need for consistency are all the same.  I wish you great success and joyful potty training!

handbook of Parents to Video Games for their children

Did you know? Video Games are Good for Children

children like games and did you know that it has been proved that there are best video games for children. In this ongoing debate on between games developing one's capability versus the effect they have on a kid's behavior, most  and bad have emerged.

It is amazinstartling how kids are intrigued by technology and how they find their way around gadgets. In the times of video phoning, children are teaching their parents just how to send a text message!

Gone are those days when the children looked forward to going to the playground and take turns on the merry-go-round. Hi-tech video games have replaced outdoor games and even board games. Children want graphics, sounds, interactive technology and the thrilling challenges that these games offer.

So parents should now replace the lazy board games with Xbox 360 and Nintendo games!

Professionals argue that there are good video games for children and they teach the children to use their motor and sensory skills. Along with this their hand-eye coordination is developed. Handling the controls teach the child the sense of space and speed and movements through multi-tasking in a game.

Only when the children have understood the instructions can they play a game to begin with. Through varying levels of hard, good games for kids help the child learn management of resources, logistics and instructions.

With time and repeated trials, children study to be determined and pursue the ultimate goal and overcome challenges that come in the way of that goal. They are able to, therefore, use this perseverance in real life activities be it sports or academics.

While trying to go on to the next level, children use reasoning and apply hypothetical thinking. Studies have shown that similar to a science or a mathematical problem, children make several attempts at solving a challenge. If one does not work, they think of another way to go around it. Parents should watch over the children when they face a challenge in case they need help.

In games where more than 1 player is required, children learn some sense of teamwork. By effective coordination and planning, they are able to work with another person and emulate that in school and other social situations.

When a child is able to crack a level, he gains confidence as that is something he did on his own without an help of adult. He gets to talk rather 'brag' about his victory to his friends and develops motivation to get more better.

Subconsciously he begins using that motivation in school as well. All the above reasons corroborate the fact that great video games for kids help in their overall development and progress.

Video Games as Physical Activity

Published: Dec 2, 2010 by admin Filed under: Gaming

It is common knowledge that video games have caught the imagination of millions of people and today most children opt to play video games indoors rather than engage in outdoor games. Many physical education professionals have condemned this trend as unhealthy.

For any child, physical activity and outdoor games are essential in the growing up years.  To remain physical healthy, children must be encouraged to engage in games like football, basketball, soccer, and tennis for muscle building as well as bone strengthening. Regular physical activity as a child will have a lasting health benefit for a person as he/she gets older.

Lack of physical exercises and remaining indoors glued to video games can lead to physical ailments such as joint aches and pains, poor digestion, weak bones and even cardiac problems. Physical inactivity is the chief reason for the obesity syndrome spreading across all countries of the world.

Before the emergence of home computers and video games, children spent more time outside engaging in their favorite outdoor games and this healthy trend routine has now been eroded. With loads of exciting computer games and tempting simulations to indulge in, children have become addicts to video games and refuse to play outdoors. The larger question is what can be done to reverse this dangerous trend and stem the rot before it is too late.

If teachers and parents believe that the children can be counseled to opt for outdoor games, then it is unlikely to yield the desired results as the addiction to video games has become so overpowering. Employing coercive tactics may not also lead to any positive results.

Having recognized the magnitude of the problem, researchers have come up with some innovative machines called 'exergames' or 'exertainment'. The use of these machines will help children achieve all of the positive results of physical exercise, without abandoning the excitement that video games provide. In pursuance of this goal, video games that incorporate various physical workouts in a compelling and yet interesting manner - have been invented.

For instance, mountaineering bikes accompanied by ride simulation video screens create a game environment with virtual competitors and monitoring mechanisms. There are visuals to track vertical jumps, rock climbing set up with video simulations where climbers evade obstacles or hop over hurdles.

In fact some health clubs have already introduced exertainment machines into their gyms and it is heartening to note that their membership strength is steadily growing. Besides, many of these gyms are providing video game consoles that require players to stand up and move their hands and legs and engage the torso muscles and physically exert themselves to move the controls.

Recent surveys have concluded that children playing video games that require physical activity demand twice the amount of energy as compared to playing a game on the TV in a continued sitting position. Thus the new types of exergames are good substitute for children who have developed a natural aversion for outdoor sport activities.

Going one step further, survey reports suggest that exergames are hugely beneficial for all classes of people regardless of age and not only children. Certain gym chains have already started roping in adults through mass marketing initiatives such as advertising and lectures. It is expected that adults will slowly overcome their inhibitions and take to exergames in large numbers
